About

Towards a sustainable business

Digital Island believe that it is important to do what we can to minimise the impact our business has on the environment. We use the government's Envirostep tool (learn more) to monitor our performance and we have implemented a number of incentives:

Invoices by Email Means Less Paper

We email our customers their monthly invoices as standard practice, which saves huge volumes of paper. The standard billing cycle sends reams of paper to thousands of customers, so we send as many as possible electronically. Another bonus is that our customers can easily save the pdf document of their bill and create a digital filing system rather than finding room to store yet more paper in their offices!

However as we are customer focused, we do post invoices if this is requested by our customers. If you currently receive your invoices by post but wish to receive them by email from now on, please let us know by emailing ecofocus@digitalisland.co.nz.  For every customer who reverts to email invoices we will donate $10 to the Tawharanui reserve TOSSI foundation.

We use FaxBox

Using our FaxBox product means that faxes are sent and received by email. The product simply attaches faxes to emails as Adobe pdf files, minimising the paper our office uses, and making it easy to forward faxed information to others or to store the information digitally. You can request FaxBox by emailing sales@digitalisland.co.nz

We support Starship and Recycle used Mobile Phones

Digital Island sends any unused mobile phones from our business or our customers to the Starship Foundation’s Mobile Phone Appeal. The money raised from this appeal helps to fund the Starship national air ambulance service which rushes top medical experts to over 200 life-threatening emergencies every year to help stabilise and return critically ill children to Starship.

Beyond that, there's the added benefit of preventing these old phones from ending up in landfill and polluting the environment. Phones in working order are refurbished and exported to places such as Hong Kong, China or to Eastern Europe, while those beyond repair are recycled through the correct environmental channels.

When all Else Fails, Recycle!

We use a recycling service for our waste paper, and buy 100% recycled paper for our office use. We also set our printer defaults to print consecutive pages on the back of each sheet, rather than on seperate pages. We use Carter Holt Harvey's Fullcircle recycling service who are NZ's leading recycler, largest supplier of natural renewable packaging and a leading user of renewable energy. They can be contacted on customer.services@fullcircle.chh.com

We use a Green Power Company

Meridian supplies our power. They are NZ's only power company that uses 100% renewable resources, and the only power company that is certified Carbon Neutral. (And they are 100% Kiwi owned - we like that.) You can get a quote from Meridian by emailing prices@meridianenergy.co.nz

We use a Green Taxi Company

Green Cabs run an all-hybrid fleet, have a sustained tree-planting programme, and are working through carbon neutral certification. They are available in Auckland Wellington and Christchurch, and you can book a Green Cab by calling 0508 447 336 or learn more about them at www.greencabs.co.nz

The Little Stuff Counts Too

We following general common sense power saving rules (like turning off our PC's and lights each night, implementing power saving functions on PC's, turning off air conditioning at 5.30pm, tuning our staff vehicles regularly and keeping tyres well inflated, using a kettle instead of a ZIP, etc.)
