What is IP Voice? Will business grade VoIP benefit me?
Digital Island's IP Voice services combine our premium data connections with our business grade SIP trunks and IP PBXs, to provide Ultra Fast Broadband, high quality VoIP calling, and access to Unified Computing and Cloud computing technologies.
Voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) is a technology which allows voice to be transmitted over data networks instead of traditional voice lines.
Business VoIP is very different to lower grade consumer products such as Skype. Our IP Voice products provide a superior level of call quality which is equal to traditional phone lines, and the use of an IP PBX means you can take advantage of increased scalability and extra functionality.
The worldwide move to VoIP provides numerous benefits. Voice and data traffic can share the same infrastructure, delivery of voice traffic is generally more cost effective, and unified communications are possible.
Business grade VoIP calling
VoIP calling enables businesses to reduce calling costs. Rates for local and national calling are reduced by around 30%, with International rates up to 50% less depending on the destination. Business VoIP calling is delivered over ultra-fast broadband, ensuring that the quality and reliability is the same if not better than traditional phone lines.
The key benefit of VoIP for multi-site companies is providing free extension to extension calling between staff located at branches across the city, country or even the world.
VoIP phone systems (IP PBXs)
IP PBXs deliver off the shelf functionality and scalability far beyond the traditional PBX. They include features such as call recording, conferencing and call centre functionality previously only found in high end specialist solutions, and enable the use of unified communications. Read more about the IP phone systems that we recommend.
VoIP phones can be either a phone on the desktop, a soft phone program that runs on your PC, or both working in tandem. e.g. click a contact on your Outlook to dial, and pickup phone handset to talk. Although VoIP handsets are more expensive, and your business will require an ultra-fast broadband connection, you maybe able to reduce your investment in phone hardware, and you will no longer need separate voice cabling.
VoIP phones connect to the VoIP PBX within the office via the office local area network (LAN). However connectivity is also possible from outside the office using the companies wide area network (WAN) and/or the Internet. This you will be able to provide both remote and mobile users with the same PBX functionality as those located in the office, and these users will also be able to use seamless extension calling.
VoIP phone lines (SIP trunks)
SIP trunking allows you to replace traditional analogue (copper) or digital phones lines with voice channels delivered over a data circuit to your office. Many businesses will achieve cost efficiencies through delivering SIP Trunk voice channels and Internet access over the same data circuit and, as SIP trunks are software based, changes such as adding more channels are quick and cost effective.
Digital Island SIP trunks are suitable for medium and large enterprises with the requirement for dozens of high quality voice channels, through to small businesses with a PBX and just a few phone lines.
To ensure high quality and reliability, Digital Island only delivers SIP over premium data circuits, such as fibre optic. Premium data circuit costs vary depending on the site location, and SIP channels cost $12 per channel per month in addition to the cost of the data circuit.
Generally the total cost per channel for a business with less than 8 channels will be same as traditional phone lines, but for businesses with more than 8 channels moving to an IP Voice solution will normally create ongoing cost efficiencies. Click here for more information on SIP trunking.
